Spotloan vs OppLoans at a glance

Spotloan and OppLoans are two of the best-known online installment lenders for borrowers with fair or poor credit. Both offer fixed payments that pay down your balance over time, and both fund quickly. They differ in how much you can borrow, how long you have to repay, what they charge, and who backs the loan.

Spotloan is a brand of Ningo Lending LLC, a tribal lender wholly owned by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota. Its lending license comes from the Tribe's Lending Commission, not from your state. OppLoans, by contrast, issues loans through bank partners in many states. You can read more about Spotloan's ownership on our Spotloan and Ningo Lending page.

Cost: how the APRs play out

OppLoans' published APR range tops out around 195%, well under Spotloan's 490% first-loan rate. Even Spotloan's repeat-customer rates of 330%–460% sit above OppLoans' range. Only Spotloan's most loyal customers, starting with their 10th loan, can get as low as 99%, which is about where OppLoans starts.

To give a sense of Spotloan's cost, here are our estimates for an $800 loan repaid in 10 biweekly payments, using simple daily interest:

Spotloan APRPer paymentFinance chargeTotal repaid
490% (first loan)$183.06$1,030.63$1,830.63
460%$175.76$957.64$1,757.64
330%$145.42$654.19$1,454.19
99% (10th loan+)$97.64$176.40$976.40

We don't publish OppLoans payment estimates because its pricing depends on your state and profile. Keep in mind that OppLoans' longer 9–18 month terms mean interest builds for more time, so a lower APR doesn't automatically mean a much lower total. Ask for the total repaid on any offer, and test Spotloan numbers in our Spotloan cost calculator.

Credit checks and credit building

Both lenders look beyond a traditional FICO score. Spotloan asks for your consent to pull data from many sources, including alternative credit agencies such as DataX and Clarity. Per Finder, OppLoans uses a soft check to apply, though it notes a hard pull on Clarity.

The bigger difference is what happens after you borrow. According to Finder, OppLoans reports to all three major credit bureaus, so on-time payments may help build your mainstream credit history. Spotloan says it may report loan activity to DataX and Clarity. Its official FAQ doesn't name Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. Late or unpaid Spotloan amounts may be reported to credit reporting agencies.

If building your credit score is one of your goals, OppLoans' reporting may be a point in its favor. If you have questions about qualifying for Spotloan, see our Spotloan requirements guide.

State availability

Your state may decide this for you. As of October 2026, Spotloan is available in 39 states. It does not lend in Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia or Washington, D.C.

OppLoans is not available in about a dozen states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

So if you live in Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Oregon or South Dakota, Spotloan may be available while OppLoans is not. If you live in Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Vermont, West Virginia or D.C., neither lender serves you. Check the full Spotloan state list for details.

Applying, funding and repayment

Both lenders let you apply online and get money quickly, but the details differ.

Spotloan

To apply for a Spotloan, you must be at least 18 and have a job or other regular income, a checking or savings account in your name at a bank or credit union (prepaid debit accounts aren't accepted), a Social Security number, a valid email, a mailing address and a phone number. Spotloan says the application takes about 10 minutes, and most applications get a decision within one minute or less. Spotloan may also ask you to verify your identity through a third-party provider.

Funding depends on when you accept your terms, in Central Time. Accept Monday through Friday before 1:30 p.m. and funds arrive by the end of that business day. Accept Monday through Thursday between 1:30 and 8 p.m. and funds arrive overnight. Accept Friday after 1:30 p.m. through Sunday and funds arrive by the end of the next business day. Your bank's processing can affect timing.

Most Spotloan customers repay by automatic ACH debit; Spotloan says 97% use it. You can also make one-time debit card payments online or by phone, or mail a check or money order. Changes to a payment schedule or payoff need two business days' notice. See the full process in our Spotloan application guide.

OppLoans

OppLoans uses a soft check to apply, according to Finder, and can fund as soon as the same or next business day. Because loans are issued through bank partners in many states, your exact terms and the name on your loan agreement may depend on where you live. Check the lender's requirements and payment options before you apply.

Questions to ask before you sign

Whichever lender you lean toward, get clear answers to these questions first:

  • What is the total repaid? Not just the payment, but every dollar you'll pay over the life of the loan.
  • What happens if I pay early? Spotloan has no prepayment penalty, and paying early cuts daily interest. Confirm the same for any other offer.
  • What happens if I'm late? Spotloan has no late fees, but missed payments keep accruing interest and may be reported. Ask each lender how it handles late payments.
  • Which credit check is used, and when? Know whether a soft or hard inquiry happens at application or at acceptance.
  • Does the payment fit my budget? Write it next to your rent, utilities and food. If it doesn't fit, borrow less or keep looking.

Who each lender fits best

Spotloan may fit if

  • You need a small amount, under $500
  • You live in a state OppLoans doesn't serve
  • You want a shorter term and plan to pay early
  • You've borrowed from Spotloan before and qualify for a lower tier

OppLoans may fit if

  • You need more than $800
  • You want a lower published APR range
  • You want payments reported to the major bureaus
  • You need a longer repayment window

Honestly, neither is a cheap loan. Both are built for emergencies when better options aren't available. If you take either one, borrow the smallest amount you need and pay it off as fast as you can.
